Access for everyone

Accessibility statement

Chintsi Mgwili Memorial is working to make INGONYAMA usable by as many people as possible, including people with disabilities.

Our commitment

Our target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This is an ongoing commitment, not a claim of full compliance. Statement updated 8 October 2026.

Available support

  • Header controls offer standard, larger and largest text, plus high contrast. Preferences are saved on this device where browser storage is available.
  • Skip links, visible keyboard focus, labelled map markers and a matching place list support keyboard navigation. Era controls work with arrow keys and direct year buttons.
  • Search result counts, filter changes and selected locations are announced through status messages.
  • Basic isiZulu navigation and selected page headings are available. Historical records, source names and most page content remain in English or their original language; full translation and community language review are still pending.
  • Reduced-motion preferences are respected.

Testing and known limitations

Browser-based keyboard, semantic and automated accessibility checks are used to identify barriers. VoiceOver on Apple devices and NVDA on Windows have not yet been tested. We do not claim screen-reader certification or a perfect accessibility score.

The schematic map has a text list alternative. External archives, satellite maps, Street View and downloaded research PDFs may have accessibility limitations outside these controls. Some dense diagrams and archival documents may still need additional accessible alternatives.

Report an access barrier

Please tell us the page, what prevented access, and the device or assistive technology used. Do not include private identity documents.
